Professor

Imagine that you are considering taking action to improve your performance to get better grades (marks) at school or get a promotion and higher pay at work: Doing additional work or extra assignments beyond what is required; Participating more actively and contributing your ideas more frequently in group discussions. Which one of these two actions do you think would be more helpful for improving your performance? Why?

John

If I wanted to improve my performance at school or work to achieve better grades or a promotion, one strategy I could implement is taking on additional work or extra assignments beyond what is strictly required, demonstrating initiative and a commitment to going above and beyond my expected duties. At school, for example, even if not required, I can participate in extra study sessions to further solidify my understanding of the material and help peers which can reflect positively on my engagement.

If I wanted to actively improve my performance in group discussions to achieve better grades at school or a promotion at work, I would focus on preparing thoroughly for each discussion, actively listening to others’ perspectives, and confidently sharing my own well-thought-out ideas more frequently; this includes not only voicing my opinions but also providing supporting evidence and asking insightful questions to further the conversation.

I believe that participating more actively and contributing ideas in group discussions would be more helpful for improving performance, whether at school or at work. While doing extra work or assignments can increase knowledge, actively engaging in discussions allows individuals to clarify their understanding, receive immediate feedback, and demonstrate their skills and insights to others. This type of interaction can lead to stronger collaboration, better relationships with peers or colleagues, and recognition from instructors or supervisors.

Additionally, contributing ideas helps develop critical thinking and communication skills, which are essential for long-term success. For example, in a workplace setting, sharing ideas in meetings can show initiative and leadership potential, which may lead to promotions and higher pay. Therefore, active participation provides both immediate and lasting benefits beyond simply completing additional work.
