Academic talk text

Good morning, everyone. Today, I want to talk about coral reef ecosystems, which are among the most diverse and productive environments on Earth. Coral reefs are built by tiny animals called polyps that secrete calcium carbonate, creating the reef structure over many years. These reefs provide habitats for thousands of marine species, including fish, crustaceans, and mollusks.

However, coral reefs are highly sensitive to changes in water temperature. Even a slight increase can cause coral bleaching, where the symbiotic algae that give corals their color are expelled. This weakens the coral and reduces its ability to grow. Human activities such as overfishing, pollution, and coastal development further threaten these ecosystems. Conservation efforts, including marine protected areas and sustainable fishing practices, are essential to preserve coral reefs for future generations.

1. Answer: B

Explanation: The talk focuses on coral reefs, their formation, inhabitants, threats, and conservation.

2. Answer: B

Explanation: Coral bleaching occurs when higher water temperatures expel the algae living in corals.

3. Answer: D

Explanation: Pollution, overfishing, and development are mentioned. Volcanic eruptions are not discussed.

4. Answer: B

Explanation: The talk emphasizes the need for conservation because coral reefs are sensitive and threatened.
