Academic talk text

Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. Tiny animals called polyps build coral reefs by secreting calcium carbonate, which forms the reef’s structure. These reefs provide habitats for thousands of marine species, including fish, crustaceans, and mollusks.

Coral reefs are highly sensitive to changes in water temperature. Rising temperatures can cause coral bleaching, in which the algae living in corals are expelled, weakening the coral. Pollution, overfishing, and coastal development further threaten reef health.

Conservation efforts, such as marine protected areas and sustainable fishing practices, are essential to preserve coral reefs. Protecting these ecosystems not only maintains biodiversity but also supports local economies that depend on tourism and fisheries.
